The Governor states the benefits of Private-Public Alliances

The creation of thousands of new jobs; the development of new infrastructure for the benefit of all Puerto Ricans; the renovation of school grounds for a better education for our children and teens; the formation of new local corporations and the opportunity for Puerto Rico to become a real global competitor, will be some of the principal benefits of the Private-Public Alliances (APP’s) that Governor Luis G. Fortuño and the members of his administration presented today upon an international and local audience of more than 400 people at the first Puerto Rican Projects Conference sponsored by the Private-Public Alliances Authority in El Conquistador hotel. President Obama Signs Puerto Rico Emergency Declaration

Extensive Resources to Address Explosion in Bayamón Area

Bayamón, P.R.- Puerto Rico Gov. Luis G. Fortuño announced this afternoon a state of emergency in the municipalities of Bayamón, Cataño, Guaynabo, San Juan and Toa Baja. The Governor and other officials also provided the latest information on the incident that took place in the Bayamón area. (more…)

Statement from Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño regarding today’s explosion at a fuel storage facility

Early this morning, an explosion occurred at a fuel storage facility in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.  A fire is currently burning in 14 of the facility’s 40 storage tanks.  First responders were on the scene within minutes, and have been closely coordinating with federal, state and local agencies to protect citizens and control the blaze.  Currently, there are no known fatalities, and the cause for the explosion is unknown. The AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) are battling against Luis Fortuño, Puerto Rico’s GOP governor, over his plan to lay off 17,000 government workers on Nov. 6.

Facing a $3.2 billion budget deficit, Fortuño says he’ll have to shut down the government if he does not lay off workers. The governor, who represented Puerto Rico in the House before his election to the top spot in the U.S. territory’s government in 2008, already laid off 4,000 workers in June. (more…)

Government Layoffs in Puerto Rico

The bad news came via certified letter to Norma Jimenez, Edna Rodriguez and nearly 17,000 other Puerto Ricans this month.

To cut spending, Puerto Rico announced last month that thousands of government employees would be fired in the second round of layoffs this year. More than 7,800 public employees were fired in March. (more…)
