Remarks to Northeast Regional Leaders Breakfast

Hon. Luis G. Fortuño

Governor of Puerto Rico

Remarks to

Northeast Regional Leaders Breakfast

New York, New York

August 25, 2009

Thanks to each one of you for joining us this morning.  I appreciate your presence and your participation.  I don’t think Puerto Rico has ever had a better group of engaged leaders and friends in this region of the country than we do today… so many of whom we have right here in this room.

Because you are engaged in at least one…and probably more…of the causes that unite us, I take this opportunity to thank you and update you on where we are on those issues, where we’re headed and the importance of your role…and those of your constituents and communities…in continuing to be pro-active, engaged participants in this process going forward. Governor Fortuño set to join President Obama, others at White House to Honor Nation’s Newest Supreme Court Justice

Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño is slated to attend tomorrow’s White House reception in honor of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The event is expected to be attended by leaders from across the Nation, who united in support of the historic nomination of the first person of Puerto Rican and Hispanic origin to serve on America’s highest court of law.

“I am pleased to accept the President’s gracious invitation and stand with him to mark this momentous occasion, representing millions of Americans whose pride in Justice Sotomayor transcends party lines” said the Governor. “Justice Sotomayor is proof positive that the American dream is alive and well, and her service on the Court and to the country will be a great example to Americans for generations to come,” the Governor said.

Governor Fortuño actively supported Justice Sotomayor’s nomination, as the first Republican leader to publicly support the President’s nominee.  Prior to last month’s confirmation hearings, the Governor sent letters endorsing Sotomayor to Senate leaders, and spoke out  strongly in favor of the appointment in various speeches and interviews with local and national media outlets.
