The governor is expanding a partnership between the Puerto Rico Police Department and the NYPD as part of his administration’s efforts to battle crime on the island.

Gov. Fortuño and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie share a word at the National Governor’s Association meeting in Boston on July 9.

Gov. Fortuño participated in the annual NGA meeting where governors discussed a range of topics, including the implementation of federal health care reform, child nutrition issues, progress of the economic recovery, national security and strategies to tackle the federal budget deficit. At the meeting, the Governor was named to the Board of Directors for the Center for Best Practices, an arm of the NGA dedicated to identifying and sharing innovative ideas and solutions in public policy.

Veteran Champion for Puerto Rico’s Status Choice
 Congressman José Serrano (D-NY) dons a t-shirt in support of H.R. 2499, The Puerto Rico Democracy Act. On April 29, 2010, Congressman Serrano, the most veteran Puerto Rican born Member of Congress, presided over the House’s historic passage of the bill. Commenting on the significance of the vote, Serrano emphasized that, “for the first time in 112 years, the Congress of the United States will ask the 4 million American citizens of Puerto Rico what they wish their relationship to the U.S. to be.”

Dynamic Duo: Gov. Luis Fortuño and Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi

Governor Luis Fortuño, Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi and the PRFAA team scored a major victory for the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico, upon securing the inclusion of the island in federal health care reform legislation. For Governor Fortuño, first and foremost, the legislation represented an opportunity to correct decades of disparities in the application of federal health care programs to Puerto Rico.

Federal Proposals Division Director Elsa Luis (standing) is pictured here with a group of participants at a recent PRFAA-sponsored workshop in the Municipality of Peñuelas. Under the administration of Governor Luis Fortuño, more than 3,000 representatives of agencies, municipalities, universities and other non-profit organizations throughout the island have been trained in techniques designed to facilitate and improve access to competitive funding, both from federal and major foundation sources.
